Shopify app vs PWA vs website: what Indian D2C brands should choose

A plain comparison of a native app, a progressive web app and a mobile website for Indian D2C brands on Shopify, with a simple way to decide.
Most Indian D2C brands on Shopify reach a point where someone asks: should we have an app? The honest answer is "it depends", but it depends on a small number of things you can check. This article compares the three options in plain terms and ends with a short way to decide. It is written by the team that builds AppDuz, a native app builder, so we have tried to be careful to say where an app is not the right call.
The three options
- Mobile website. Your Shopify theme, opened in a phone browser. Every Shopify store already has one.
- Progressive web app (PWA). A website that can be added to the home screen, can work partly offline and, on Android, can send web push notifications. It still runs in the browser engine.
- Native app. An app installed from Google Play or the App Store. It has its own navigation and screens, and can use the phone's push notifications and other device features directly.
What a mobile website does well
Your mobile website is where almost all first visits happen: ads, Instagram links, Google search and WhatsApp shares all open in the browser. Nothing needs to be installed, and Shopify keeps checkout fast and familiar.
If most of your customers buy once or twice a year, the mobile website is where your effort should go first: page speed, clear product photos, COD and UPI options at checkout, and a simple menu.
What a PWA adds, and its limits
A PWA can feel more app-like without an app store listing. On Android it can be installed from the browser and can send web push notifications once the shopper allows them.
The limits matter for a store:
- Installing a PWA is a browser prompt that many shoppers never notice.
- On iPhones, web push only works after the shopper adds the site to the home screen, which few people do.
- A PWA does not appear in Google Play or App Store search.
For many Shopify stores, a well built theme with good performance gets most of the benefit a PWA would.
What a native app adds
A native app earns its place with repeat customers. Once installed, it sits on the home screen, opens straight to your store, and can send push notifications about orders, restocks and offers without relying on email or ad spend.
Native apps also let you design shopping around the phone: bottom navigation, saved items and quick reorder feel natural in an app in a way they rarely do in a browser.
The costs are real too:
- Shoppers have to install it, so you need a reason for them to do so, such as app-only offers or faster reorders.
- It needs a Google Play listing, and an App Store listing for iPhone users, each with its own review rules.
- Someone has to keep it updated as Android and iOS change.
How to decide
Answer these four questions with your own Shopify numbers, not industry averages:
1. Do customers come back? If a meaningful share of orders are from repeat customers, an app has something to work with. If almost every order is a first order, improve the website first. 2. Is mobile already most of your traffic? For most Indian D2C brands it is. Check the Shopify analytics device breakdown. 3. Do you have a reason to install? Early access to drops, app-only offers, loyalty or faster reorder are common reasons. Without one, installs stay low. 4. Can you keep it looked after? An app that is not updated or promoted slowly loses shoppers.
A rough rule: fix the mobile website first; consider a PWA if you want home screen presence for Android shoppers without a store listing; build a native app when repeat buying is a real part of your business and you have a reason for shoppers to install.
Categories where apps tend to fit
Brands with frequent repeat purchases, such as beauty and skincare, grocery and fashion with regular drops, usually have the strongest case. Brands selling rare, high-ticket purchases, such as furniture, may still benefit, but mainly for browsing and wishlists rather than frequent orders.
Where AppDuz fits
AppDuz builds a native app from your Shopify store. You can connect a store and design the app in a live preview today; native Android builds, push notifications and billing are still being finished, and iOS follows Android. If you are not sure an app is right for you, trying the preview costs nothing and shows what your catalogue looks like as an app.
